Applying the Divine

For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.”

2 Corinthians 10:3–4

When God sent his Son to accomplish the work he did on our behalf, God was sending Himself. Therefore, divinity came to us in Jesus. After Jesus accomplished the finished work on the cross and the resurrection, he then sent the divine to us by the Holy Spirit, for all who would believe by faith. Because of this, if you know Jesus Christ, you have the divine living in you!

So, what does this mean? I think it means much more than we think or give it credit for. The Apostle Paul had experienced the power of this divinity in his own life, and now writes to the Church of Corinth to remind them of the same thing. This divinity in you has real power that is ready to be activated!

Let’s think about our thoughts for a moment. We all have thoughts every single day, more than we can count! Some thoughts are good, appropriate, or even godly. Other thoughts though, are quite the opposite. Because of our sin nature, we struggle with our thoughts, which is why Paul addressed this to the Church of Corinth. We often struggle to think in a way that honors God, but even though we “walk in the flesh,” as our text today says, we are not defined by the flesh if we are in Christ. All of the countless thoughts that rush through our minds––fear, anxiety, worry, lust, anger, jealousy, bitterness, and shame––can all be acknowledged, tackled, and defeated! The only way this can happen, is if we apply the divine power of Jesus Christ in us to our specific situation.

When you are reminded of the divine, you are reminded of the power you have to overcome! We not only have the ability to distinguish good thoughts from bad thoughts, but we have the ability to overcome them.

The Christmas story is a reminder of the divine coming to us. It’s also a reminder that we have the divine in us because of the gift of salvation!

How can you apply the divine to your thoughts and actions this week?
